DESCRIPTIVE-WRITING :
1. This type of composition tests your ability to describe people, events, places and things.
2. Read the question carefully and find out what you are supposed to describe.
3. Study all the notes given. Add more points of your own using your knowledge about the topic to help you come up with your points.
4. Arrange your points in a logical order. Then, elaborate on the points.
5. Use adjectives, adverbs and verbs that help you to clearly describe what is required. When you describe a scene or an event, you must describe in detail:
• what you saw, heard, smelt, tasted and touched
• your feelings about the scene, event, person or thing
6. Your description must be clear and vivid. From your description, the reader should be able to understand what you have written and visualize the scene or event.
7. Write a draft of your composition. Read through the draft and add extra points if necessary. Make sure you have included all the points given in the question. Use your imagination, experience and knowledge to elaborate on the points.
8. Make sure you use the correct tense. Descriptions can be written in the present tense for scenes, people and things but are usually in the past tense for events.
9. Make suitable changes to your composition to make it more interesting. Then, write out your final composition.
10. When you have finished writing your composition, read through it to check for mistakes. Be sure that there are no mistakes in grammar, punctuation and spelling. Make whatever correction that is necessary.
